Automotive Aerodynamics Ep. 10: FASTBACK comparison!
Просмотров 12 тыс.8 лет назад
In celebration of 10 episodes we look at the aerodynamic differences between the Acura (Honda) Integra gsr, the Mazda RX-7 Fc, and the Porsche 911 Turbo, some of the sexiest fastback cars from the 80's and 90's. The analysis was performed experimentally using PIV (particle image velocimetry). A comparison shows similarities and differences between the vehicle models. For more, see www.GraysGara...

In this newest short episode of automotive aerodynamics we look at the aerodynamics of the 3rd gen Mazda RX-7 FD vehicle! The results show that this car is not far off from the earlier FC model, but because of the new car body design, can benefit from an OEM rear spoiler. Lower drag and higher downforce are possible! Watching this video after waiting a month for my Result Japan Roof Wing for my GR86, bc I wanted to find a good GT wing for actual downforce 😅. I know this is an old video but if you see my comment, please give me some advice on what kind of wing and mounting height in relation to the rood wing won't make it do more harm than good. Im now realizing that the trunk spoiler + roof spoiler + GT wing may be a bit much but I also like to actually perform well at the track so to sum up my biggest question right now. If I want to have the roof wing and trunk spoiler for the looks, and I plan to have a proper chassis mount splitter, verus underbody, and a proper chassis mount GT wing, will the non functional aero, (roof wing and trunk spoiler) hurt me or can I still make a functionally fast car with it if ai set it up right and how can i do that?

      @ScrewUserNames6587 2 дня назад

      Also just for reference the result Japan roof wing doesn't have the little accent flap at the edge but it does plane out the roof line so I imagine I would need a rear wing just tall enough to crest just above the roof wings highest point? Or should I completely abort the roof wing because the drag will be far too great and ultimately ruin the cars high speed performance 😊

    The 911s are actually pretty bad and all sorts of tricks were used by the actual race cars to smooth them out. The turbo tail is mostly to accomodate the intercooler but also to reduce lift at high speed. Not for downforce. The earlier cars used a small duck tail to acomplish that and also to help with air flow into the engine grill it was nessessary to cancel out the vacuum because it needed flow into it not out. Also if you run a tail you also needed a front spoiler or it would get very light and unstable in front.

    Hi man, I have minor bents in the fins of a new Car AC evaporator which arrived today after waiting for 2 weeks. Does the small Bents affect the car AC system? Should I return it ? Bents are small but I am afraid it will cause damage. I hope someone can answer and help me. Last year I lost my Car's AC compressor, and condenser due to a bad evaporator which development mould in it & led to Black Death & destroyed the whole AC system. So I hope some can help with this question 🙏

    I am in the process of doing a rebuild on a silvertop but the ITBs are going to another project while the ST is going to go the forced induction route. Any tips for getting the 16 mounting screws loose without stripping their heads? I've PB blasted them multiple times and taken a heat gun to them for longer than I'd like, but not even impact tools are getting them to budge.

    Hey great info here. If you don't have a trunk or roof spoiler and don't intend to track the car but want some downforce. I have a mk4 supra with no wing and don't want to put a large wing on it as it is a street car. Would putting a well designed roof spoiler help with downforce or just leaving it without anything?

    Can this be explained briefly . Is the increased airflow under the car good for downforce at the front. With the new front splitter. Or is it creating lift at the front. I'm wanting to cut a big tunnel in the Frunk to increase airflow . And move more air ove the front of the car do you think this would work.

    2:26 well the key thing missing here is that the engineers dont do that for production cars, it is always a balance of factors to get the car to fit within crateria for general use cases, its a very real possibility you could do better than the engineers did with the areo because they were not going for maximum efficiency at all costs, the car has to sell to mass markets and be cost effective to produce. Im not defending the roof wing here especially with the vehicles that are using them with a spoiler or wing but there is a place for roof spoilers and that place is on modern vehicles like a SUV where there is not a trunk lid to mount anything on.

    Hi, So, I drive an 04 Honda HR-V and it has a spoiler, from factory, before the end of the car... what might it be for? It's an 90/10 FWD Mini SUV with the aesthetic of a curvy brick. I suspect that it is to stabilize the air, so , technically drag reduction, since it is virtually flat and has not angle of attack and the car it's self can go particularly fast.

    the GTR notchback has a big bubble behind the windscreen...the wing would have to be higher to be in "good air" and work effectively. Give them a break. Any aero device is pretty moot under 80 kph...and it only costs $99 to look cool.

    Nice Video, I appreciate your effort. But these experiments are not accurate. Because the reynoldsnumber and mach number are not in the similar range as for a real car. Here are some calculations: the reynoldsnumber on a real car based on height of the car: height e.g.: 4ft (1,22m) velocity e.g. 60mph (26m/s) vicsocity e.g. 14e-6 m^2/s speed of sound e.g. 765mph (340m/s) -------------------------- Re = 1.22*25/14e-6 = 2.2 million Ma = 26/340 = 0.076 If your experiment should describe the reality, then you should be as close as possible to this numbers. e.g. you choose a scaled car of 1:18 To match the Reynoldsnumber your velocity in the experiment should be around 26m/s*18 = 468m/s... which ist faster than the speed of sound. ok you can also change the viscosity if you choose heated or cooled air or you choose a different gas or fluid. here an another approach: you use water with 80°C (176F) which has a viscosity of 0.37e-6 m^2/s. Because we want a renoyldsnumber of around 2.2 Millions, we get a velocity of 12m/s. And a mach number of 0.007. Which would be a comparable experiment with the real world. The reason of the low Mach number is the very high speed of sound in water at 80°C. The speed of sound is around 1555m/s (3500mph)

    I'd also add that on the 4agze you CAN go beyond the stock 8psi safely (done by many of us MR2SC owners) but only upto around 14psi. This is with a larger crank pulley turning the SC12 faster. To get that extra boost and not have the Air Bypass Valve kick in at 8psi and vent the extra air you do the "ABV MOD" or blank the ABV entirely. This then means the engine can uses the extra air/boost upto 14psi. Many have ran for years like this (nearly 20 years here!) and its been fine. Another tip: If your SC12 seizes and you've done the ABV mod your car probably won't start at all as no air can get through the SC12 and only a small amount through an unmodified ABV (stock.. it might start with enough air through the ABV but would probably die or go into limp mode when revved/driven).
